Running with Horton this summer on the CDT?

If you go out to run with Horton on the CDT this summer, you should consider a few things:

  1. You need to be self-sufficient.  You need to supply all your own food, tent, supplies and other gear.
  2. JB and Horton will not be able to shuttle your car around for you.  If you come out, you should bring someone else to drive your vehicle.  If possible, consider driving Horton's crew truck so that JB can get in some running on the trails.
  3. When possible consider bringing Horton and JB something special to eat or drink (you know Horton loves ice cream & milkshakes so it's always welcome) or a full meal.  If you live close to the trail, fix them a meal and let them stay at your place for the night.
  4. When you run with Horton, please run behind him or slightly behind him if it is a place that you can run side by side.  He needs to be setting the pace.  If you can’t keep up, he is mean, he will leave you on the trail.

On the side bar (and in an earlier post), there is a list of CDT Post Office Drops that JB and Horton will check weekly.   Please consider sending them a card or goodies (something that will not spoil).  Contact from the outside world will be appreciated.

Please e-mail me for more information or if you have questions.

Josh Cox shares his 1997 MMTR experience

I meant to tell you all about this when Josh posted Part 1 of his MMTR blog 2 weeks ago.  Nevertheless, JC has completed Part 2 of his story which you can access here (as well as part 1):

Side note: JC & I attended and ran together (well, Josh was always ahead of me) at Liberty University. Since then, Josh has developed into an elite marathoner (*PB - 2:13). Josh writes a great story!

WARNING: Potential Spoiler! I remember when he ran & won the MMTR in course record fashion (6:57) - I was working Aid Stations 3 & 16 (the Z-boys aid stations).  Josh blitzed through Porters Ridge running like he just started a 5k...but there's always more to the story...

*PB is Canadian for personal best instead of the American standard PR or personal record!

Horton's CDT adventure

As many of you know, this summer David Horton is going after a speed attempt on the CDT.  Horton's calculated mileage for his CDT adventure totals 2959 miles which he plans to cover in just over 69 days.  eco-x is thrilled to be blogging about this incredible journey all summer long.  The plan is to blog daily and, in addition, have some photos & videos posted by various crews.  Perhaps the most authentic piece to all this is an audio blog addition.  On occasion, Horton will call in and leave a message that will be posted in audio format so everyone reading can also listen to his own story!

Here's an example:

Cheers and stay tuned for more!

Sean's winning time of 4:44 is very impressive given the heat & humidity of the day.

Bear sighting on my run!

This past Friday I saw five Black Bears on my run - it was awesome, and my first sighting in a few years.  Three were cubs, most likely less than 3 months old.  The two sows were traveling together, one in front in one in back.  The leading sow crossed the MMTR course (about half-way between Peavine Mtn and Dancing Creek aid stations, see map)

Map image

approx. 50 meters in front of me, followed closely by 3 small cubs.  At first I didn't see the second sow; I was distracted by watching the 3 cubs scurry up a tree after a sow grunted to alert them of possible danger (me).  The second sow then popped up from behind a small embankment and starred straight at me.  I calmly told them I was not there to harm them and backed up to give them more room.  After about 5 minutes, the bears moved on and I down the dirt road.  It was an awe-inspiring moment and really topped my run!

New Blog

I've decided to incorporate this new blog into my eco-x site. I don't find wordpress very intuitive so I'm going to switch.

Hence, this blog will include eco-x races updates, etc. as usual but I hope to also make this a personal blog about my adventures.
