Mountain Masochist Trail Run is once again honored to be a part of the Montrail Ultra Cup series and this year, there are some exciting changes to the series that we want to make you all aware of. But first, some history. The Montrail Ultra Cup has been around since 2002 and is the only national ultra series that includes distances of 50k, 50 miles, 100k and 100 miles. Past winners include Scott Jurek, Nikki Kimball, Paul Dewitt, Dave Mackey, Jenny Capel and more. Truly an Ultra series, and spanning from California to Vermont, the 2009/2010 Montrail Ultra Cup includes 11 events (a few with multiple distances) and culiminates at Western States 100 in July. You must register online and complete at least 2 races in order to be eligible for points and standing. Once you’ve registered, your points and finishes will be automatically tracked and scored. Final series points will be made up of a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 4 race scores.
Automatic entry into Western States 100 can be earned by finishing top 2 male/female in every race over 50k. This is a change from past years, as many of the auto-entry spots earned in 50k races weren’t being used. Also, Western States 100 is no longer a mandatory race for the Ultra Cup. It’s just too hard to get into. So, you can now compete in the Ultra Cup and have a chance at winning without having to run Western States. It will count for more points, because it’s the only 100-miler, but it’s not required. For more details on the rules and scoring, see the Guidelines page.
The Montrail Ultra Cup offers cash and product prizes for overall series winners:
1st - $2500 cash, Montrail shoes, Nathan pack, Nuun product
2nd - $1000 cash, Montrail shoes, Nathan and Nuun product
3rd - $500 cash, Montrail shoes, Nathan and Nuun product
4th – Montrail shoes, nathan and nuun product
5th – Montrail sandals, Nathan and Nuun product
Mountain Masochist is such an incredible race, and epitomizes the essence of Montrail so perfectly, that Montrail, in spring 2009, released the Mountain Masochist trail shoe, which has gone on to be named Gear of the Year by Outside Magazine for the Trail Run category.
We look forward to seeing you in Lynchburg, VA in early November for the 2009 Mountain Masochist Trail Run.
